WMS operates Monday-Thursday from 9am - 2:05pm according to the year's Academic Calendar
Arrival (8:55-9:00)
Morning Meeting (9:00-9:30)
This is where we will focus on building our classroom community through social-emotional learning activities and lessons.
We will also focus on autonomy, taking time to set our personal goals for the day in our Goal Journals.
Core Subjects (9:30-11:30)
This time is structured, but with choice. Learners will be given daily tasks to complete and they must manage their own time to make sure they are completing these tasks. These tasks may include independent hands-on activities, virtual lessons, lesson practice, and small-group lessons with the guide. The guide will also be there to help learners if they are struggling, after the learner has tried on their own.
Lunch/Recess (11:30-12:15)
Learners will again be given the opportunity to manage their own time (with guidance, of course), by choosing how much of their time they would like to spend eating and how much to spend playing.
PE, Art, or Music (12:15-12:45)
PE on Mondays and Wednesdays
Activities will vary between class games and sports.
Art on Tuesdays
Various focuses throughout the year, ranging from simple seasonal crafts to experimenting with different mediums and making art in the style of famous artists. Learner choice and interests are emphasized.
Music on Thursdays
Various focuses throughout the year, exposing students to music theory, basic instruments, famous musicians, singing, and music appreciation. Learner choice and interests are emphasized.
Science/Social Studies (12:45-1:15)
Sometimes in small groups or as a whole class.
We will switch between Science and Social Studies units, integrating them together whenever possible.
We will perform hands-on experiments for Science and learners will get to choose how they demonstrate their learning in both subjects (written report, diorama, perform a mini play, oral report, etc.).
Learner-Led Problem Based Learning (PBL) (1:15-1:45)
Learners will have the opportunity to build their critical thinking and problem solving skills to solve real-life problems in topics that interest them. For 6 year olds, this may be as simple as "help the penguin get across the ice" and for 10 year olds, the task may be to design their own food truck, complete with a budget, expenses, menu, orders, and more. During this time, learner choice and autonomy is heavily emphasized.
Clean Up (1:45-1:55)
Learners will work together and participate in clean up chores such as sweeping, wiping down tables, swiffer-mopping, vacuuming, washing science experiment tools, emptying the trash cans, etc.
Closing Meeting (1:55-2:05)
We will reflect on our goals we started the day with and write in our Goal Journals.
Dismissal (2:05)
